Center for Medical Biotechnology (ZMB) is inviting applications for

 

1 Ph.D. position

in the group of Prof. Dr. Andrea Vortkamp at the Department of Developmental Biology) We are interested in the molecular mechanisms regulating the development and pathogenesis of the vertebrate skeleton.

Osteoarthritis (OA), the degeneration of the articular cartilage in the joint, is one of the most frequent diseases of the aging society. Previous results indicate that heparan sulfate plays a critical role in the maintenance of the articular cartilage. In this project we plan to decipher if inhibition of HS function will protect against OA progression. The project includes tissue-explant and cell culture investigations under different mechanical loading conditions, comparative expression studies using next generation sequencing and high-resolution microscopy. 

 

The project is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and is part of the research consortium ExCarBon (FOR2407), offering networking with specialists in a wide-range of biomedical disciplines and access to innovative techniques and methodologies. In addition, the Center for Medical Biotechnology provides an intradisciplinary and international research environment with ideal working conditions and state of the art facilities.  

 

The PhD program at the University Duisburg-Essen offers a well-structured, multidisciplinary doctoral training program (BIOME).

 

We are seeking highly motivated candidates able to work both, independently and in a team, who are interested in close collaboration with the other groups of the consortium. Eligible candidates should hold a Master or an equivalent degree in Biology or a related discipline. Advanced knowledge in embryology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular or cell biology are of advantage for successful applications.

in the group of Prof. Dr. Andrea Vortkamp at the department of Developmental Biology. The group is interested in the molecular mechanisms regulating the development of the vertebrate skeleton. In this project we aim to investigate the role of Glycosaminoglycans (heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate) as regulators of growth factor activity and distribution in chondrocytes. Specifically, the project will include the culture of cell lines and primary cells on GAG-presenting biomimetic platforms and the subsequent analysis of signaling activity focusing initially on Ihh and Bmp signaling. The project is funded as a French-German (ARN-DGF-) research initiative and will be carried out in close collaboration with the groups of Dr. Elisa Migliorini and Dr. Romain Vivès in Grenoble France. It will contain two internships of several weeks in the partner laboratories and allow an interdisciplinary education in biomedical and biophysical techniques.

The group of Prof. Dr. Andrea Vortkamp at the Centre for Medical Biotechnology (ZMB), University Duisburg-Essen, Campus Essen, is inviting applications for

Our group investigates the molecular mechanisms regulating development and degeneration of the articular cartilage. In this project we aim to investigate the role of heparan sulfate (HS) in the development and progression of osteoarthrosis, one of the most prevalent degenerating diseases of the skeleton. Based on previous experiments demonstrating that specific alterations in the HS structure have a protective effect on the progression of OA, we now plan to evaluate if HS antagonists can act as potential therapeutic agents. The project includes the investigation of HS antagonists in a murine OA model, comparative expression studies using RNA-Seq, cell and organ cultures, high resolution microscopy, and the biochemical investigation of HS-protein interactions. The project is part of the DFG research group ExCarBon and an intensive interaction with other groups in this consortium is expected.

 

The Center for Medical Biotechnology provides an excellent scientific environment and ideal working conditions. In addition, the group of Andrea Vortkamp co-operates with national and international (France, Sweden, USA) experts in different disciplines giving the opportunity to learn new methods in their laboratories.
